Artspeak…
The above is a random paragraph from this years ‘Coastal Currents’ arts festival guide, but it contains 3 words that are on almost every page and which i have truly come to loathe - ‘intervention’, ‘negotiated’ and ‘maneuverings’. What is with this cold, mechanical, dull, repetitive, buzzword, mediawhore art-speak?? 5 years ago, every artist in the western world was so desperate to write that they were ‘controversial’ or ‘challenging’ or ‘vibrant’ - now it is the above. The art might actually be worth seeing - there is no picture of it in the guide - but it reads like the sound of nails on a blackboard. Yuk.
WHY do people write such bland, academic drivel about their work?
